The Barlow Charity

The Barlow Charity was set up in 2006 by Mattishall Parish Council, following the purchase of the redundant Victorian school building and adjoining playing field in the centre of the village. This purchase was made possible by a generous legacy left to the Parish Council by Mr & Mrs Barlow.

Mattishall Parish Council is the sole member of the Barlow Charity and it appoints Trustees to the Charity for administration, management and development duties.

The original task of the charity was to organise the building of affordable housing for local people and create a village green and car parking area on the former school playing field. The plan for the Victorian former school building was to create a community centre and social hub for the village.

The village green, the affordable housing and car park have all been completed successfully, but it was not possible to refurbish and convert the old school building, primarily due to the very high cost of the necessary works and the lack of funding.

In September 2012, the village voted to demolish the building and further consultation with the village revealed the need for a new play area.  Due to the hard work of a proactive committee, the play area opened in July 2017. It includes play equipment for toddlers and school-age children, gym equipment for teenagers and adults, and a table tennis table for all ages.

The Barlow Charity is a limited liability company registered with both Companies House (No 5789811) and the Charity Commission (No 1113881).

The current Trustees are Richard Norton, John Rockliff and David Piper and can be contacted via the Clerk to the Council.
